Cheese Museum Kobarid
CHEESE MUSEUM KOBARID
The Soča region has been known for its tradition of mountain grazing and cheesemaking for thousands of years, as confirmed by written sources from the 12th and 13th centuries. The Mlekarna Planika in Kobarid is based on this heritage, and together with the Tolmin Museum, they have prepared the collection Od planine do Planike, which presents the rich history and cultural tradition of the area to visitors, schoolchildren and tourists.
Mlekarna Planika, together with the Tolmin Museum, presents the rich tradition of mountain grazing and cheesemaking in the Soča Valley in the historical and ethnological collection Od planine do Planike.
With professional guided tours, they aim to bring this heritage closer to the wider public and preserve knowledge about life and work on the mountain pastures, which still live in the hilly areas of the Soča Valley, mostly above 1,000 meters above sea level.
The museum provides an insight into this unique cultural tradition to both domestic and foreign visitors.
In the museum, visitors can see the old cheese factory, where the traditional fire under the cauldron has been preserved, and the archive cellar, where old Tolminc cheeses mature.
There is also a mountain hut on display, equipped with tools for processing milk into cheese, which shepherds used in the past and are still used in some places on the mountains of the Soča region today.
The beginnings of cheesemaking are presented on the panels, from difficult times to the present day. In addition to the cheese factory, one of the main attractions is a short film that shows visitors how work and life on the mountains were carried out.
By visiting the museum, they want to introduce visitors to the modern processing of milk into cheese and dairy products at the Mlekarna Planika, where old recipes and ancestral traditions are still preserved today.
They are preparing product tastings for groups that have been announced in advance.
