Only in winter, when nature sleeps and the number of tourists significantly decreases, will you truly feel what peace in the unspoiled nature of Triglav National Park means. When the world is covered with a blanket of snow and everything sparkles in the sunlight, we truly realize how magical nature is.
Frozen waterfalls become artistic sculptures, and snow-covered spruces turn into snow queens. Set out on an unforgettable snowshoe tour and discover the secrets of Zlatorog’s kingdom in the company of an experienced mountain guide, who will take you on a wonderful journey through a snowy fairy tale.
The Soča Valley in winter offers a beautiful contrast: while snow might be rare along the river in Bovec or Kobarid, the side valleys and plateaus above them are a true paradise for snowshoeing. Thanks to the high mountains, the snow here is often dry and powdery, and the views of the Julian peaks are among the most beautiful in the Alps.
Best destinations for snowshoeing:
Last Trenta: From the source of the Soča towards the Zapotok mountain range
This is one of the most beautiful corners of Slovenia, where you will probably be completely alone in winter.
Experience: The path winds along the valley floor along the bed of the dry stream Suhi potok. The terrain is relatively flat and gentle, which is ideal for relaxed snowshoeing.
What you will see: You will be surrounded by the mighty walls of Jalovec, Bavški Grintavc and Pelce. The silence here is almost palpable.
Safety: As long as you stick to the valley floor, the path is safe from avalanches. However, if you want to continue steeply upwards towards the Zapotok mountain range, great caution is required due to the steep slopes above you.
Starting point: The hut at the source of the Soča (886 m). In winter, the road up to here is usually passable, but further into the valley it is snow-covered.
Destination: Zapotoški slapovi (1140 m)
Walking time: 1 h 20 min
Difficulty: partly difficult unmarked trail
Elevation difference: 178 m
Elevation difference along the trail: 200 m
Trail description:
This incredible valley is one of the most beautiful snowshoeing destinations in the Soča Valley. Suitable for complete beginners, where we will spend our journey in the company of the surrounding peaks and exploring the diverse wildlife that makes this special area their home.
Note: this tour is only available when the road up to Koča pri Izviru Soče is open.
Snowshoeing towards Mangartska Sedlo is a high-altitude treat, but most snowshoe hikers stop at Mangartska Planina.
Starting point: Turnoff to Mangart above Log pod Mangartom (at the bridge over Koritnica, around 810 m). Parking is possible in a small, well-maintained parking lot in front of the turnoff.
Destination: Mangartska Planina (1295 m)
Walking time: 1 h 30 min – 2 h (depending on the thickness of the snow cover)
Difficulty: Easy unmarked path (follows a snowy mountain road)
Elevation difference: 485 m
Elevation difference along the path: approximately 500 m
Route: Follow the snowy Mangartska Road. The path is long, but relatively safe, as the road winds through the forest and over tunnels.
Mangartska planina: When you reach the mountain, you will be greeted by an incredible view of the northern face of Mangart. This is an ideal spot for a break and a snack from your backpack.
Caution – Tunnels: You will pass through several tunnels on the way. In winter, they often have huge ice candles and ice on the ground, so be careful.
Route description:
This trip will take us to the highest road in Slovenia, which is closed to vehicles in winter – towards Mangart. The route will take us through tunnels carved into the mountains and up to a vast snow-covered plateau, leading to stunning views of the wide Mangartsko saddle, with dramatic mountain scenes surrounding us.
Lepena Valley (to Dr. Klement Jug Lodge)
Lepena is a fairytale in winter, as the sun rarely reaches it, so the snow remains soft and untouched for a long time.
Kuhinja Mountain and the mountains below Krn (above Kobarid)
If you are looking for sun, the mountains above the village of Krn (Kuhinja, Kašina, Leskovca) are the best choice.
Možnica (Koritnica)
This is a closed valley near the Kluža fortress.

Če iščete nepozabno romantično doživetje, poiščite svobodo v dvoje: zimsko krpljanje ob polni luni in utrinkih vam bo izpolnilo vsaj eno željo.
CHOOSE SAFE GUIDED SNOWSLEERING
When snowshoeing, it is important to take safety precautions, as unforeseen situations can quickly occur in winter conditions. Therefore, it is best to go snowshoeing with an experienced guide who knows the terrain well and can show you the most beautiful trails in the Soča Valley. This way, you will be able to completely relax and enjoy the beautiful winter nature.
If you are going snowshoeing on your own, it is recommended that you prepare well and check the weather forecast before leaving.
