Monte Lussari

TRIP TO THE PILGRIMAGE PLACE OF THE SLAVS,
GERMANS AND ROMANS.

In the 16th century, the mountain was called the God’s Way of the Three Nations, but today it is called the God’s Way of Europe. The church dedicated to the Queen of Lussari was renovated in 2000. Only a few years later, a new circular cable car was built in Monte Lussari. Otherwise, the cable car was built for the needs of the winter ski center, which offers idyllic skiing.

TRAVEL INSTRUCTIONS

Drive through the Predel international crossing to Trbiž/Tarvisio, and then continue driving in the direction of Videm/Udine and the settlements of Žabnice/Camporosso and Valcanale. When Trbiž ends, a little after the Eurospar store (the store is on the right side of the road), before the main roundabout, turn left onto Via Lussari. We drive along the mentioned street for a few 100 meters, then we reach a small intersection, and from the intersection we continue straight and after the intersection, we park in the parking lot on the right side of the road. We park in the lower part of the parking lot, in the upper part parking is prohibited with a traffic sign.

The beginning of the trail, at the starting point

From the starting point, we continue along the asphalt road closed to public traffic, which leads us past a few houses. Above the hamlet, the path takes us past an information board, and then the asphalt ends. We continue our journey along the macadam road that leads us through the Višarje Graben, through which the Rio Lussari stream flows. Higher up, the road turns into a wide carriageway, and the Stations of the Cross appear along it.

At the signpost

In the continuation, we climb for some time on the carriageway, from which we only occasionally have a view in the direction of the Carnian Alps, where we can see Ojstrnik. Higher up from the carriageway, turn right onto the marked footpath in the direction of Kamniti lovec/Cima del Cacciatore and Monte Lussari (straight along the carriageway to Višarska planina/Malga di Lussari). This is followed by a climb through the forest, at XIII. station of the cross the trail is quite close to the ski slope and the service road. We continue to the right along the footpath (we can climb the road to Višarsko sedlo/Sella Lussari and on to Kamniti lovec) and climb across. Continue left under the cable car, and then follow the signs for Monte Lussari.

On the trail

A little further on, the wide path is guarded by a fence, and increasingly beautiful views of the western Julian Alps, where Montaž is the highest, open up to us. When we pass Beračni kugel/Monte Prasnig on the left (the summit to which the cable car leads), we descend in a few steps to the road, and continue along it all the way to the hamlet and the church in Monte Lussari. From the church, in a minute or two, we climb to the top of Monte Lussari, where the cross stands and from where a beautiful view opens up.
