Soča River – The Emerald Beauty of the Alps

The Soča River rises in Trenta and winds its distinctive turquoise color through the Triglav National Park all the way to the Adriatic Sea. It is known for its wild rapids, ideal for kayaking and rafting, as well as its calmer pools, suitable for swimming and fishing. The Soča is one of the most beautiful European rivers and a paradise for nature lovers and adrenaline sports enthusiasts.

MEET THE GUIDE: Matic Terčelj

Matic Terčelj started kayaking at the age of five, when his father first put him in a kayak – and since then, the sport has become his passion. Later, he competed for the Slovenian national team in whitewater slalom and rafting, winning medals at world and European championships.

20 years ago, he realized that he wanted to share his knowledge and love of kayaking with others. First, he improved his father’s technique, and then taught his younger sister Eva basic strokes.

An important part of his river activities is also the annual cleaning of the Soča River and removing dangerous obstacles from the river. He teaches in Slovenia and around the world and has paddled on some of the most beautiful rivers, from New Zealand to Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nepal and Norway. However, he always prefers to return to the most beautiful of all rivers – the crystal clear and stunning Soča!

WHY KAYAKING?

The Soča River is one of the most popular kayaking destinations in Europe. Rapids of different difficulty levels (from I to V) are suitable for both beginners and very experienced kayakers who prefer technically demanding sections.

Kayaking down the Soča River fills kayakers with the special feeling of experiencing nature. Gliding along the undulating emerald water surface stops every now and then in the quiet corners of the river and is touched by freshness, murmur and magical views. A kayak trip in the Soča Valley is a real cooling down on hot summer days, and you’ll forget about the bad weather on rainy days.

spust s kajakom

Kayaking in the Soča Valley and its surroundings is possible on sections of rivers and lakes:

  • the river Soča (various levels of difficulty),
  • Koritnica river (suitable for experienced kayakers),
  • lake near Most na Soča (suitable for beginners),
  • Rabeljsko jezero (suitable for beginners).

A permit is required for navigation on the Soča and Koritnica rivers. Before you head out on the river, check out the navigational and safety information. If you are not familiar with it, we advise you to go on the river in the company of an experienced guide.
