TOLMIN MUSEUM
Tolmin area, to which the Bovec and Kobarid areas also belonged, has a rich archaeological, ethnological, and cultural-historical heritage.
The Tolmin Museum was opened in the Coronini Manor in 1951 with the aim of collecting and preserving the nation’s heritage. It operated independently for seven years, and then in 1958 it was merged with the Gorica Museum, under which it remained for 42 years.
In 2000, the Tolmin Museum became an independent public institution, covering the fields of archaeology, ethnology, history and art history in the area of Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin.
The museum is headquartered in the Coronini Manor in Tolmin, which houses administrative, storage and exhibition spaces, a library and a wedding hall for smaller events.
The museum houses a permanent exhibition, Debris of Soča History, divided into three sections.
The archaeological section on the first floor shows the Soča region from the Old Stone Age to the arrival of the Slavs, who shaped the ethnic image of the area. The second section on the second floor deals with the Tolmin rebellion, the peasant uprising of 1713, and life and events in the Upper Soča region from the 19th to the 20th centuries. The basement exhibits art and historical works, such as frescoes, sculptures, paintings, and furniture from wealthy homes in the Bovec, Kobarid, and Tolmin regions.
The ground floor gallery hosts occasional exhibitions.
In addition to the main collections, the museum takes care of external collections, such as the archaeological museum and the foundations of the Roman house in Most na Soči, memorial exhibitions in the birthplaces of Simon Gregorčič in Vrsno, Ciril Kosmač in Slap ob Idrijci and Simon Rutar in the village of Krn, ethnological collections in the old town of Breginj, Robidišče and in the TNP home in Trenta, the wooden granary in Pečine and the German ossuary at the confluence of the Soča and Tolminka rivers.
Online exhibitions are also available on the museum’s landing page.
