RACING DOWN THE WHITE SLOPES
Sledding in the Soča Valley is a fun winter activity for the whole family. Although this form of recreation is usually more popular with children, racing down the white slopes brings joy to adults as well.
Mangart Saddle, one of the highest road-accessible mountain passes in Slovenia, offers an unforgettable winter experience for nature lovers and snow activity enthusiasts.
In winter, when the road is closed to traffic due to snow, the saddle becomes a popular spot for recreational sledding on snow-covered slopes. Its natural inclines provide safe and enjoyable sledding for families as well as for adults seeking adrenaline and fresh mountain air.
In addition to sledding, Mangart Saddle is a starting point for winter hikes, ski touring, and breathtaking views of the Julian Alps, where you can admire Mount Mangart, Jalovec, and the surrounding peaks. Descents on natural slopes offer a perfect combination of movement, exploration, and unforgettable moments in a snowy landscape.
Distance from Residence Soča: Mangart is approximately 22,5 km away (about a 30-minute drive) from Residence Soča, making it ideal for a pleasant full-day snow adventure.
If you want winter fun close to the ski resort and snowy slopes, Log pod Mangartom is an excellent choice for a short trip in winter. The Encijan ski resort is located here with two lifts and short, beautifully groomed slopes, ideal for families, beginners and children.
When conditions are favorable, there is also a simple toboggan run next to the ski resort, where you can go down the snowy slopes and enjoy winter fun.
The entire village of Log pod Mangartom is surrounded by the mighty peaks of Mangart, Jalovec and ridge Loška stena, which create a beautiful winter scenery. In addition to skiing and sledding, there are also groomed cross-country trails and idyllic paths for walks in snowy nature.
Distance from Residence Soča: Log pod Mangartom is approximately 16 km (about 20 min drive) from Residence Soča, which allows for a pleasant day trip to the snow and an active winter time.

Kolovrat is best known for its unique historical and memorial sites, where the ridge offers incredible views over the Soča Valley and the Julian Alps. Here, you can explore the Open-Air Museum and the Walk of Peace trails from World War I. In winter, when there is enough snow, you can also enjoy winter activities such as sledding and sliding down natural slopes along the trail, providing unforgettable moments of laughter and family fun in the fresh mountain air.
The Kolovrat Open-Air Museum is part of the Walk of Peace — a cross-border open-air museum with preserved positions, observation posts, tunnels, and viewpoints, offering much more than a typical nature outing.
Although there isn’t a formal sledding track like at ski resorts, the natural slopes along the hiking paths in the snowy landscape become a playground for sleds and toboggans, making it a perfect addition to a winter hike for families and friends.
Starting point for exploring Kolovrat: Approximately 30–35 km (around a 45-minute drive) from Residence Soča, making it ideal for a pleasant day trip with family or friends. The hiking trails and natural sledding slopes are suitable for anyone seeking a combination of history, nature, and winter adventure.
If you like winter fun in nature, a trip to Rifugio Zacchi is a wonderful choice. The starting point of the trail is at the Laghi di Fusine which is about 74–92km (about 1h 15min drive) from the Soča Valley and makes a pleasant day trip into the mountains. A well-marked trail leads from the lake to the hut, and the walk takes approximately 1h 30min – 2h to the hut or viewpoints.
At the top, you can sit down, enjoy the sun and the views of the surrounding peaks, and then descend back with bobsleighs or sledges on the snow — recreational sledding in a natural environment that combines exercise, exploration and fun. The sledding experience on the way back is pleasant, as the trail is covered in snow and just soft for the descent.
